"If one member suffers, all suffer together..."
1 Corinthians 12:26

Providing food for those in need in Harlan is one of the primary goals of Project JOY

I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink...Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me.

Matthew 25:35 & 40 MSG

  • Imagine you did not get three meals a day and everyday it was a struggle to provide just one meal that was barely nutritious.
  • Imagine that for every meal you had to use rice, beans, potatoes or some other filler to get enough food to fill the empty bellies of your children. This would be heart-breaking for any parent.
  • Imagine sitting in school trying to concentrate and all you can think of is how hungry you are.
  • Imagine seeing your child having all kinds of health and dental issues caused by malnutrition and to make matters worse you have no medical coverage.
Food Collection
Sorting Food

Our goal with the Food boxes is to provide protein rich, hardy foods to assist those in need. By providing basic food items we believe we can help with one of the basic necessities of life.

In 2007 we took 400 Food boxes to Harlan. This means we were providing supplies to over 1200 people. In 2008 we aim to provide at least the same number of food boxes but also improve and increase what goes in each box
All the items in the food boxes are either donated or purchased and then assembled in our gymnasium at Priest Lake Presbyterian, before being transported to Harlan.
Bargain hunting Moms and their teenage children spread out through Nashville and strip the shelves of local supermarkets of items they find on sale.

Laundry Supplies and Toiletries
In the Food Boxes we also supply Laundry Detergent, Dish Wash Soap, Bath Soap, Shampoo, Deodorant, Tooth Paste and Tooth Brushes, Toilet Tissue, Feminine Hygiene Supplies, Tylenol and other essential cleaning and health products. These products are greatly needed as when you are on welfare these products are not available with Food Stamps and so you are not able to purchase these items. If you are thinking of donating food do not forget these essential items.

If you want to help by providing food or making a donation please contact our Food Coordinator, Rachel Fields by emailing her at food@projectjoytn.org

"The numbers are staggering. Today 37 million Americans live in a state of poverty, hunger and hardship. That's more than last year. More than ever before. But working together, we can reverse the trend. By joining with those in need, we can change the picture of poverty to one of hope."
